10 simple actions to significantly reduce your risk of cyberattack

October 12, 2022

With the accelerated race towards digital adoption, cybersecurity is becoming increasingly important. #Cybersecurity represents the protection of your digital systems and related data stored in your internet-connected environment from cyber threats and perpetrators.

▶️ Why should you care?

According to CyberSecure Canada:

⚠️ Cyber attacks have increased by 300% during the pandemic globally. These attacks are pervasive and damaging to economic and social systems

⚠️ In 2021, 25% of businesses experienced a cyberattack and 41% of small businesses that experienced cyberattacks reported costs of at least $100,000, a 4% increase from 2019

Quickly protect your business continuity, finances, and reputation by improving your cybersecurity posture through the following actions:

1️⃣ Enable anti-virus and anti-phishing security software on your devices (Microsoft Defender that comes with Windows is already good protection)

2️⃣ Educate your employees regularly about the risks of cyberattacks

3️⃣ Have a clear plan of action in case of an incident (who, what, when)

4️⃣ Frequently back up and encrypt your data on an “offline” media to isolate it from any attack from the internet (backup)

5️⃣ Keep your operating systems and applications up to date by automatically applying patches and updates

6️⃣ Use a Password Manager app with a strong and unique password generator together with two-factor authentication (2FA/MFA)

7️⃣ Control access permissions to your systems and data based on the actual needs of each of your users

8️⃣ Secure your corporate network behind a physical firewall

9️⃣ Secure your website and access to your cloud, mobile and outsourced services

🔟 Get your SME certified under the CyberSecure Canada program.
